The 12 Days of Winter Woodland Tree Decorating

If you follow me on Instagram, I've been counting down the 12 Days Of Woodland Fir Tree Decorating. Read (or sing, you know the tune!) below to see how I designed a dreamy Winter Woodland Christmas Tree.

On the first day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Use single object front and centre in your tree as focal points.

On the second day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Because what woodland tree doesn't have turtle doves?

On the third day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Forest creatures are a must in any woodland themed tree. These cute glass and gold ornaments elevate the level of sophistication of the tree.

On the fourth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Vintage baubles add an element of pattern, texture and surprise to a tree, but be careful because they shatter easily!

On the fifth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...five berry picks

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Berry picks and stems are great for filling gaps and holes in trees and add a nice pop of colour.

On the sixth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Long, thin icicles provide a contrast to other ball-shaped ornaments. They are easy to weave into the back of front of branches to add fullness to the tree. These particular icicles have twinkle lights inside, so that add an extra sparkle to the tree.

On the seventh day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...seven glittery feathers,

six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Unexpected tree decorations, like feathers add interest to the tree. The glittery finish adds dainty flair to a rustic theme.

On the eighth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...eight crested cardinals,

seven glittery feathers,

six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Faux red cardinal birds add another great pop of colour to a predominately green fir tree. Attaching different sized cardinals to branches adds a realistic feel to a winter woodland themed tree, bringing expected outdoor elements inside.

On the ninth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...nine mercury glass ornaments,

eight crested cardinals,

seven glittery feathers,

six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Mercury glass is also known as silver glass. It is double walled, reflective glass, so the ornaments are quite heavy. They are perfect for a lit Christmas tree because they glimmer and shine when reflecting the white tree lights. Because mercury glass ornaments are heavy, they are great placed deep in the tree, resting on the inside branches for an extra sparkle. I like to show case different shaped mercury glass ornaments around the tree.

On the tenth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...ten pieces of ribbon,

nine mercury glass ornaments,

eight crested cardinals,

seven glittery feathers,

six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*That's 10 - 5 foot pieces. I chose to wrap the woodland tree in a "garland" style, loosely looping, twisting, weaving and tucking the ribbon between branches. I went in a circular direction around the tree. This usually takes 20-30 yards of ribbon.

On the eleventh day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...eleven dazzling pinecones,

ten pieces of ribbon,

nine mercury glass ornaments,

eight crested cardinals,

seven glittery feathers,

six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Nothing says winter woodland tree like some pine cones! Go to your local park and forage for some pinecones. Let them dry, then spray them with a gold glitter paint, then while they are still wet, roll them in supper fine glitter. I added some mini brown glitter pinecone stems for added texture and depth, in addition to the bigger glitter pine cones.

On the twelfth day of tree decorating, my true love handed me...twelve metallic balls,

eleven dazzling pinecones,

ten pieces of ribbon,

nine mercury glass ornaments,

eight crested cardinals,

seven glittery feathers,

six shimmering icicles,

five berry picks,

four vintage baubles,

three forest creatures,

two turtle doves,

and a glam stag in a woodland fir tree.

*Metal Christmas balls that are the same colour, but different finishes (matte and shiny) complement and finish a tree. They are the fillers of holes and add a soft colour of a shine where need be. Every year I use a different solid colour ball, depending on my theme. They are the finishing element, but the most important to tie the tree look together.

In addition to the 12 days of tree decorating, I used some clear glass ornament I love from now gone, 18 karat and some unique one of a kind 3D wood ornaments with snow inside that I picked up at the Christmas market that have a very rustic feel.

I decided that a tree collar or skirt would dominate the tree too much and I wanted to keep the focus on the little creatures and surprises hidden in the tree, so I decided to wrap the base with one of my West Elm throws for a natural, cozy feel.

And last, but not least, I wanted to keep the tree topper rustic and simple, yet still dainty, so I used a script topper from Anthropologie that says "Noel".

I hope you have enjoyed the 12 Days of Winter Woodland Tree Decorating.

Wishing you a joyeux noel from my home to yours,

Krista

P.S. If you've made it this far in the post, congratulations! In case you are wondering who it was handing me all of the decorations, it was...

Lola or (#lifeoflola) - enjoying the holiday decor from her sheepskin lined throne!
