Succulents are definitely having their moment in the design world. Many indoor spaces are adorned with these small fleshy plants. Succulents are dry weather plants that retain water in their leaves, giving them a plump look. They require lots of direct light and only occasional watering. Here in Vancouver, they grow best in the summer, when our weather is sunny and warm. I have not been as lucky during the winter months when days are shorter and darker.
For the sake of longevity and lack of direct sunlight where I want to display the arrangement, I decided to use faux succulents to create this Succulent Centrepiece for my kitchen island this summer. Due to their popularity, faux succulents are easy to find in shops everywhere. I purchased the large and draping succulent plants at Hobby Lobby and a package of medium and small succulents from Michaels.
As my centrepiece arrangement is visible from all sides, I kept the number of succulents positioned in opposite corners balanced. I always try and group items, or in this case, plants, in 3's or 5's. If you are displaying your arrangement with only a few sides visible, you might want to group the large and medium succulents in a different manner. Or use more succulents with height. It is entirely up to you how you arrange the plants to fit your space.
If you make a succulent arrangement centrepiece, I encourage you to use your favourite succulent varieties. There are many faux succulent plants with beautiful pink and purple highlights. I opted to stick with a varied green palette, however I encourage you to have fun and use colour if it blends into your space.

Summer Succulents Arrangement Centrepiece
Materials
1 wooden tray, box or planter (my box is 11" X 7")
1 piece of dry flower foam cut to fit inside of box
moss (I used dry)
3 large size succulents* (I used two of the same shape and one in the centre with height to add depth to the arrangement)
3 medium size succulents* (I used three the same shape and colour)
2 draping succulents* (for opposite corners)
12-14 small succulents* (for filler)
1 string of warm white fairy twinkle lights
*The number of succulents needed will vary according to the size of your box and how full you would like the arrangement to be.
Method
Place dry flower foam into the box.
Top with moss, pulling a few bits over the edge of the box for visibility and aesthetic.
Arrange succulents, starting with the large and medium sized plants. When you are happy with the arrangement, press stems into flower foam to secure.
Fill remaining holes in arrangement with small succulent fillers.
Weave twinkle lights evenly throughout the arrangement under leaves and around plants. When lit, it should look like ground cover for the plants.
