Pink is the new grey, & other 2020 Colour Of The Year predictions

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

Late December is usually the time of year when major paint company's make their colour predictions for the coming year. This January is not only a new year, but a new decade and it looks to be a big year for re-introducing more colour into design, home decor and our wardrobes.

Style, whether it's for home or your clothing, mimics what is happening around the world, pulling inspirations from nature, the environment, politics, culture and people. I love that as unique as our home and clothing styles are, there are still repeating patterns in trends.

Here are some highlights from the 2020 colour forecasts:

1. Fall 2019's popular earth tones - ochre (Behr's colour of the year), rust and greys are still hot, transitioning from fall into 2020 and beyond.

Neutrals are being warmed up from cool undertones to more taupe greys and natural colour palette's taken from nature.

2. It's all about the pastels, especially pink! Benjamin Moore predicts that pink is the new grey when it comes to decor. It's taken a while, but what was not too long ago an Instagram sensation - That Pink Door in Palm Springs (Image below: by @Fodor's) - due to it's front door colour, is now a mainstream choice. Pink front doors popping up everywhere now - including my neighbourhood!

Pink isn't just popping up on doors and home exteriors, it has also become a new indoor neutral. Chairs, headboards, throws, cushions and tablescapes are all softening up rooms and interiors.

Plush modern armchairs and headboards made from textured pink fabrics are definitely room focal points, despite their neutral qualities (right). Chair & headboard images by: The Cross Design.

Pink can also be used as an accent, like these throw pillows from West Elm (far right bottom).

Pink tablescapes are also blushing from popularity right now. I'm loving the look of these layered pink asymmetrical serving dishes combined with pastel glasses (above). Very chic! Tablescape image by: Crate and Barrel.

Clothing is also loving pink, with it showing up everywhere from casual to formal wear.

3. Classic Blue is coming in strong for 2020 as Pantone's top colour prediction of the year. Blue grounds a room, without being too harsh. Use it as an interior accent wall colour, or to paint wooden pieces such as hutches and chairs, like in HGTV's latest Dream Home, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Image below: by HGTV website.

Classic blue brings to mind images of water, beaches and an overall feeling of calmness. Bring that sense of relaxation to friends and family with tablescapes (right) and accents throughout your home, like these throw pillows (below). Both images from West Elm.

Classic blue is definitely present in spring/summer clothing lines. It is classic, yet confident in a non-standout way.

I can't wait to see how these three colour predictions play out in the coming years style and design trends! So far 2020 is looking pretty calm and grounded.

Take care,

Krista
