I don't know about you, but am I ever ready for the holidays! This fall has been a very unique and stressful time. I'm looking forward to some relaxing nights at home with the family between Christmas and New Year's. It is the first time in over a decade that we will all be staying home for the holidays.
So, to celebrate the start of the winter break, I'm sending a very special cocktail your way. It's one that reminds me of one of my favourite (and often visited) NYC restaurants - Freemans, in the Lower East Side. Freemans is a hidden gem, a small house leftover from another era, tucked into an alleyway in between high rises and buildings. The house has been turned into a restaurant and is eclectically decorated. It is as unique, as the NYC space it inhabits. The food and cocktails are diverse in option and full of flavour. I totally recommend you add this spot to your NYC list, as it is definitely worth a visit when we are allowed to fly the skies again!
This Winter's Cup Cocktail is a riff on the Freeman's house cocktail. It is pucker-up tart, so not for the faint of heart. Add more cinnamon simple syrup to taste if it's too tart for you! A Winter's Cup is the perfect winter cocktail to warm your tummy over the next few weeks!
I hope you enjoy this and many more winter treats this holiday season.
Take care and stay safe,
Krista xo
A Winter's Cup Cocktail (adapted from here)
makes 1 drink
Ingredients
2 oz Rye (I used Sazerac Rye from NOLA)
3/4 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz cinnamon simple syrup (*see Recipe Notes below)
1/2 oz pomegranate molasses
3-4 dashes orange bitters
Garnish: dried orange wheel and cinnamon stick (or a flamed orange rind would add a lovely smoky element)
Method
Add all ingredients (except for the garnish) into a cocktail tin. Add ice and shake until the outside of the tin becomes chilled. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with orange and cinnamon stick.
Recipe Notes:
*Cinnamon Simple Syrup (this will make extra, keep leftovers in a glass container in the fridge for 2-3 weeks)
Ingredients
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
4 cinnamon sticks
Method
In a small sauce pan add sugar, water and cinnamon sticks. Bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and simmer, stirring regularly until all sugar has melted. Remove pan from heat and allow ingredients to infuse and cool for 30 minutes. Strain simple syrup into a glass jar, discarding cinnamon sticks and any residue. Refrigerate until ready to use.
