Cinnamon Blood Orange Mezcal Sour

Well, we've almost made it to the weekend. It's a very strange time in the world. In only a few weeks, we have forever altered our vocabulary - words like social distancing, physical distancing, self-isolation, flatten (or plank) the curve, etc. will document and describe an era in time. An era we will share globally, together.

It's feeling pretty quiet outside these past few days, which is a good thing, it means Vancouverite's are being respectful of everyone's health and well-being. For this we are thankful.

A few weeks ago, prior to the need for social distancing, I had a few friends over to taste test Blood Orange Sours. We taste-tested four variations of this cocktail and all ended up liking something different! Here's how it went:

*Two of us preferred the cocktail with Mezcal, while one of us preferred Tequila.

*One of us preferred the cocktail with cinnamon simple syrup, while the other two preferred their drinks with a thyme simple syrup.

Due to the split in our tasting, I decided to include a few recipe options for mixing your perfect version of this cocktail. Or feel free to do your own taste-test and let me know what you think!!

In the meantime, it's Friday, you've earned it - it's time for a #cocktailoftheweek. So, let's all mix a cocktail and remember at 7:00pm tonight, to clap and give thanks to all of the hard working doctors, nurses, lab techs, care aids and front line workers for all they are doing during this pandemic.

Take care,

Krista

Cinnamon Blood Orange Mezcal Sour

makes 1 cocktail (perfect for self-isolation, except it's so good, you might need two!)

Ingredients

For The Cocktail

2 oz Mezcal (or 2 oz of tequila)

1 oz blood orange juice, freshly squeezed

3/4 oz lime juice, freshly squeezed

3/4 oz cinnamon simple syrup (or thyme simple syrup)

1-2 dashes Angostura bitters

dried blood orange slice (or cinnamon stick), for garnish

For The Rimmer

1 teaspoon pink himalayan salt, ground

1 teaspoon black lava salts, ground

1-2 slices fresh lime

Method

Grind himalayan and lava salts onto a small plate. Run lime slice around the rim of an old-fashioned glass. Dip glass into plate of salt to coat rim. Set glass aside

In a cocktail tin add mezcal (or tequila), blood orange juice, lime juice and a simple syrup of your choice. Fill tin with ice, add lid and shake until tin is chilled and condensation forms on the outside. Strain cocktail into glass.

For Cinnamon Simple Syrup

(you will have extra)

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup water

3-4 cinnamon sticks

In a small sauce pan, add sugar, water and cinnamon sticks. Bring mixture to a boil, then stir to dissolve sugar. Remove sauce pan from heat and allow to cool for 30 minutes. Strain mixture into a glass container, reserving cinnamon sticks for garnish. Refrigerate until ready to use.

For Thyme Simple Syrup

(you will have extra)

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup water

2-3 sprigs thyme

In a small sauce pan, add sugar and water. Bring mixture to a boil. Stir to dissolve sugar and remove from heat. Add thyme sprigs and allow mixture to steep for 5-7 minutes. Remove thyme sprigs and allow syrup to cool completely. Pour into a glass container and refrigerate until ready to use.

Recipe Notes:

While I like the Mezcal-cinnamon-blood orange combo for winter, I can totally picture a Mezcal-thyme-blood orange combo on a sun-filled summer patio. I will have to re-visit this in July!
