Chilly Winter Evenings = Hot Toddy, A Family Classic

It's January friends, and the rain has been pouring here in Vancouver for what feels like the last month! I don't know about you, but when the winter temperatures drop and the rain/snow starts, I like to snuggle up with a cozy, warm drink. There are many winter warmer cocktail/drink recipes out there, but I prefer a classic, like the Hot Toddy.

The Hot Toddy is a refreshing warm drink with a couple of everyday ingredients; a spirit (I use Woodford Reserve bourbon), lemon juice, honey and hot water. The addition of lemon juice brightens the drink, while the honey balances the tart. Make no mistake, Hot Toddy's are not a light drink, they can pack a punch. Drink one of these and you are sure to be warmed up!

Below is our Forbes' Family Hot Toddy Recipe. Growing up, my Dad used to make a Hot Toddy before bed when he wasn't feeling well. It was his comfort drink - to clear his sinuses, rid himself of symptoms and ensure he had a good sleep. I'm not sure if a Hot Toddy ever did "cure" his colds, however I do know it definitely helped him have a sound sleep ;)

Today I reserve Hot Toddy's for when I am looking for a drink that is cozy, warm and comforting. This winter, as we are all staying at home with additional quarantine restrictions, I hope this sipper brings you some comfort and warmth as well.

Enjoy and take care,

The Forbes Family Hot Toddy

makes 1 drink

Ingredients

1 warm heat-safe glass

1.5 oz bourbon (see Recipe Note below)

1 oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed

3 teaspoons honey (this can be adjusted to taste)

1/3-1/2 cup hot water (I like mine almost boiled. Adjust quantity to taste preference, I like 1/3 cup for a stronger spirit-forward flavour)

lemon wheel, garnish

cinnamon stick, garnish

Method

Warm glass then add bourbon, lemon juice, honey, hot water and mix until combined. Garnish with lemon wheel and cinnamon stick.

Recipe Notes:

*Hot Toddy variations - depending on your preference, Hot Toddy's can be made with rum (my Dad's preferred spirit), brandy, or even Fireball is you adore a pronounced cinnamony flavour. The honey can be substituted with maple syrup for a very Canadian flavour.

*For mini or individual shot sized glasses (images above), double recipe.
