Bourbon Slush

Super Bowl is just around the corner and here in Vancouver we are scheduled for some much needed sun! I have been waiting to post this fabulous Bourbon Slush recipe that I've been testing since the summer. It is definitely a hit with everyone who tries it!

The best part (aside from the flavour) of Bourbon Slush is that is can be made in large batches, ahead of time, so that you, the host are free to enjoy yourself. I'm thinking of game day parties (when we can have them again), outdoor bbq's, sunsets at the beach or even more intimate backyard porch parties. The recipe I have listed below makes 4-6 servings, depending on size, however the recipe can easily be doubled or tripled for larger crowds!

There are many variations of Bourbon Slush, or Kentucky Bourbon Slush online. One of the things they all have in common is the use of frozen orange juice and lemonade concentrates. Even the most "elevated" of websites say not to replace these store-bought concentrates with freshly squeezed OJ or lemonade. This drink is meant to be easy - to go with casual, non-fussy good food! Don't try and make this fancy, after all, it is a slush.

This weekend, I will be feasting on "jar"cuterie and enjoying an adult slush while watching a bit of football and of course, the half-time show! I hope you too take some time to sit, relax and enjoy some deserved family-time.

As always, if you make this Bourbon Slush, let me know what you think in the comments below of post to @mykuratedlife or #mykuratedlife on Instagram.

Happy Super Bowl,

Bourbon Slush (adapted from here)

makes 4 large servings (recipe is easily doubled, or tripled if serving a crowd!)

Ingredients

2 cups boiling water

3 black tea bags

3/4 cup sugar

4 oz frozen orange juice concentrate (half a container)

4 oz frozen lemonade concentrate (half a container)

1 cup bourbon

1.5 cups water

1 orange, sliced into thin wheels (garnish)

splash of ginger beer (optional)

Method

In a small bowl add 2 cups boiling water and tea bags and steep for 10 minutes. Pour 1 cup of strong tea into a medium sized freezer proof container and discard or drink the rest! Add sugar while tea is still warm and whisk to dissolve.

Once tea/sugar mixture syrup is cooled add frozen orange juice concentrate, lemonade concentrate, bourbon and additional 1.5 cups of water to freezer proof container. Stir to combine.

Place container into freezer and allow to freeze for 24+ hours (or until it reaches a desired consistency - my container took 36 hourse) stirring occasionally with a fork to distribute ice and break large clumps apart. The slush will not freeze completely, due to the alcohol (bourbon) but will become slushy.

When ready to serve, scoop slush into a cocktail rocks glass and garnish with a sliced orange wheel. Top with a splash of ginger beer (this is optional - I preferred my slush without the gingerbeer as I lost the bourbon flavours, however half of my recipe testers liked it best with the ginger beer - it's totally up to you!).
