St. Patrick's Day brings to mind gathering at casual pubs (preferably Irish) and local establishments with friends and family to celebrate all things green. This March, for the second year in a row we will be celebrating in family groupings only, due to Covid. With that in mind, I wanted to share a celebratory drink recipe that would make a good Irish pub proud - a drink that is tasty to drink, and easy to make at home - introducing The Black and Tan Beer Cocktail.
Simply put, the Black and Tan has a mere two ingredients - a good quality lager for the Tan (you could try pale ale here also) and a good quality stout for the Black! In combining my love of all things Irish and all things local, I decided to use Guiness (of course - for the stout) and Parallel 40 Brewing's Craft Lager (for the lager).
You will need glasses and a Black and Tan Turtle if you have one - or a large soup spoon will work if you don't.
Black and Tan Beer Cocktail
makes 3-4 pints, depending on the size of your glass (a North American pint glass holds up to 16 oz)
You Will Need:
1-2 cans of Guiness Stout, lightly chilled
1-2 cans of Parallel 49 Craft Lager, lightly chilled
Method:
To start, fill two pint glasses half full with lager.
Then, place a Black and Tan Turtle (image below) on top of one, half full pint glass.
If you do not have a Black and Tan Turtle (image below), use a large inverted soup spoon (rounded side up), holding the tip against one edge of the glass.
Slowly drizzle stout on top of Turtle's back or rounded soup spoon until glass is full. Add Turtle to second, half full glass and repeat stout drizzle.
The slower you pour the stout, the more defined the light (tan) and dark (black) coloured beer layers will be. Serve immediately.
As the drink sits, the stout will blur into the lager below creating a stunning amber affect in the middle of the two beers.
Wishing you a very Happy Home St. Patrick's Day.
Sláinte!
