A Front Door Hanging Flower Basket Fit For Summer

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

Front door wreaths are often associated with fall and winter home decor. I however ,like to have wreaths up all year long. I love the sense of welcome and warmth that a door wreath invokes. With summer fast approaching, I wanted to try something different with my front door decor this year, so I decided to create a faux blooming Front Door Hanging Flower Basket. Not only is this decorative door Hanging Flower Basket easy to create, but it looks just like a summer bouquet with flowers and succulents bursting out of the top!

I started my search for a door basket online. I wanted a basket style that was modern in shape, yet warm in colour to blend in with my charcoal hued front door. I ended up with a hanging door basket from World Market (here). It is a flat, oval shape with the top slightly wider than the base. Once I found the perfect basket, I started my search for faux flowers (I used faux florals to last the entire season) and greenery to go inside - all were purchased from Hobby Lobby (they have an amazing selection and great prices), Michaels and Pier 1.

As the exterior of my home is a traditional character home style with multiple colours (burgundy and gray with a butter beige trim), I wanted to keep the flowers in the door basket neutral. I stuck with classic white flower blooms and multi-shades of green foliage. As I quite often re-purpose or re-design my wreaths and florals to match my porch decor, I felt the neutral shades could readily be used in other arrangements

When creating any centrepiece or grouping with flowers, whether it's with real flowers or faux as in the case of this hanging door basket, I tend to stick with the idea of using "Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers".

For the Door Flower Basket "Thrillers" I used:

*three stunning magnolia blooms. The large blooms spread out and the pink/red centre draws in the eyes immediately.

*three spiky green trick dianthus. To be honest, I had to look up the name of these unique lime green flowers! Please, let me know if I've got the wrong name! I just love how the spikes contrast with the arrangement's otherwise soft feel, and they give the basket such great height.

For the Door Flower Basket "Fillers" I used:

*two white hydrangeas. As the opening of my basket is larger than the base, I needed voluminous flowers to fill the space. These hydrangeas are perfect with their multi-blossom petals.

*eucalyptus and boxwood sprigs. Both plants multi-tonal greenery and leaf variation tucks in-between the other flowers to fill the arrangement out.

For the Door Flower Basket "Spillers" I used:

*2 hanging succulents. I grouped both succulent plants together to spill over one side of the basket. I like the asymmetry of the height (green tick dianthus) on one side of the arrangement and the "spilling" (succulents) on the opposite side. It adds interest to the basket as a whole.

Other Materials Needed

1 Hanging Door Basket (size will depend on your front door, this basket is 14.5" tall X 12" wide for reference)

1 thin block of dry flower foam (optional depending on preference & the width of the basket)

Method

If using dry flower foam, insert into middle of basket. If your basket is too narrow, or your faux florals have long stems to stabilize in the basket on their own, omit the foam.

Beginning with the "thrillers", place focal blooms into the basket.

Once happy with placement, begin to add in the "filler" looking at basket from all sides to ensure balance and height.

Finally add in the "spiller".

Hang Flower Basket with a Command Hook or wreath hanger and enjoy!

I hope this Front Door Flower Basket tutorial is helpful and inspires you to create your own decorative front door hanging basket!

Wishing you a warm and happy summer ahead.

Take care,
